Season Finale for High School Points and TCR this Weekend
A summer full of rain hasn’t been very nice to the local High School and TCR Points racers this year. With seven points races scheduled from May to early August, rain was the dominant theme early on. Current High School Points Leader Cory Grimes said, “I love racing and I really want to win points, but it rained and I kept thinking ‘we’re just going to have to make it count in the next race’.” Thankfully, Mother Nature began to cooperate in July and it’s been a battle between the teenagers ever since. Going into the final Points Race this Friday night, Grimes, from Eldridge, has a little more than a one round lead on fellow North Scott racer Michael Wedemeyer. While racing has been in his blood for the past few years, this is Grimes’ first year in the High School Points program. “I raced TCR last year and I think it’s a great way for kids to get started in a full size car and be so young. Friday is very important and I think I can win (the series) if I try hard. I’m going to show up and do my best.” Grimes finished.
On the Teen Championship Racing side, the current TCR Points leader going into the final race is Kewanee native, Bobby Ince, Jr. Ince, 13, and in his first year of racing a “big” car leads over second place points-holder and current Junior Dragster racer Jacob Miner. “I like that you can see what you have for the future with driving a top sportsman car or even a stocker,” said Ince. “Racing in TCR has shown me how to play the stripe and get better reaction times. You get the feel of going down the track, even though it’s not a quarter mile.” CIR General Manager, Bobbi Jo Cox, added, “Our High School program has always been a popular one at Cordova and we’re very excited to see how much the TCR program has grown over the past two years. We love to see how excited these parents and kids are to be racing together and having fun! I can’t wait to see who wins the championship tomorrow.”
Gates open at 5p Friday, with racing from 5:30-10p. Then on Saturday, it’s the August Dash for the Dough featuring a $2500 To Win Box/No Box race, CIR Footbrake Race, West Racing Heads & Chassis Concepts Quick Series, Junior Dragster All Run and Test n Tune.
