King of the Track Crowned at Oktoberfest

With the racing season slowly winding down, the weather was (for once!) on the racer's side this past weekend for the 2015 Oktoberfest of Drag Racing at Cordova International Raceway. With temps in the 80's all weekend and not a drop of rain in sight, over 200 racers converged on CIR for a full weekend of racing. Saturday held a Super Bracket Combo with $2500 to win on the line for the Box and No Box racers. The finals came down to Pete McGlynn of Long Grove, Iowa and Charlie Hamma of Davenport, Iowa. McGlynn, who lost first round but bought back, had a great day on the tree with a .004, .001, and .003 light in the 4th, 5th and 6th rounds. He faced Pat Naughton in the 7th round of the No Box final to claim the win on Naughton's breakout. On the Box side, Hamma worked his way through seven rounds of tough competition, where he had a .004 light 4th round as well, to face Brian Lynch in the Box final. Hamma came out on top with a win with his 7.634 ET on a 7.63 dial to Lynch's 7.874 breakout on a 7.89 dial. In the run-off final, McGlynn came out victorious on Hamma's -.001 red light to take the win. On the Low Roller class side, it was Paul O'Keefe from Morris, Illinois taking on Justin Rosenbohm of LeClaire, Iowa. O'Keefe came out with the win with a .021 light and a 12.563 pass on a 12.54 dial to Rosenbohm's .045 light and a 14.363 pass on a 14.36 dial. The Junior All-Run class started with eighteen entrants who whittled down to the final two competitors - the super junior entry of Jillyn Ruter and the novice junior entry of Hannah Ince. In the final, Ruter took the win on Ince's red light start. Finally in Trophy class, it was Jim Harden, the Ozark Mountain Super Shifter racer, from Galesburg, Illinois taking on Adam Naeve of Bryant, Iowa in the final. Harden came out the winner with a 9.041 run on a 9.04 dial to Naeve's 9.950 run on his 9.94 dial.
Sunday's Iron Man race was blessed with another great weather day, too! Although overcast, racers were making tons of great runs with ten perfect lights during competition. In Top Et, Ed Bousman from Camanche, Iowa took home the Iron Man against Jeff Nelson from Peoria, IL. Bousman's .011 light helped seal the deal on Nelson's breakout pass. It was Jason vs. Jason in the Modified final where Jason Huggins of Morrison, Illinois took on Jason Ackerman of Winnebago, Illinois. Huggins's .007 light with a dead-on .005 run beat Ackerman's .016 light with a .02 off run. Super ET's Iron Man trophy went to Grant Zimmerman of Morton, Illinois. Zimmerman beat David Walling of Clinton, Iowa in a double break-out race. Zimmerman had an .020 light and ran 11.661 on an 11.69 to Walling's .030 light and 12.460 run on a 12.51 dial. The True Street final pitted father against son in an all Rosenbohm final. Father, Mark, took on son, Justin, in another double breakout race. Mark's .038 light and 15.577 ET on an 15.59 dial edged out Justin's .025 light and 14.396 ET on a 14.41 dial for the Iron Man. In the Junior class, it was Super Junior Nate Kelly taking the win against Novice Junior Daizy Orozco in the run-off when Daizy's car couldn't stay fired on the starting line. Rounding out the classes was Adam Naeve taking the win in Trophy class over Denny Rankin of Davenport. Rankin's red light sealed the deal for Naeve to leave Oktoberfest with both runner-up and winner trophies.
Also running at Oktoberfest were the Ozark Mountain Super Shifters. Cars from across the Midwest converged at Cordova for their final points race of the season. Going into Sunday, the battle for the OMSS Championship was close with Justin Clark, Billy Leaf, Chris Schmitz and Jim Harden all within striking distance of the Championship. After the dust had settled, Billy Leaf emerged as the 2015 Champion in his class, something he hadn't been able to say since his last championship in 2006. Winning the race itself on Sunday was Jamie Kelley from Galesburg in his 80 Malibu over Dirk Zimmerman of Morton, Illinois in his 55 Chevy. The OMSS Consi Race winner was Ron Niles over local racer Billy Miller of Colona, Illinois.
The highlight of the day was the run-off for the 2015 CIR Track Championship - also known as the King of the Track to many. Class Champions Justin Rosenbohm (Street), Myranda Cozad (Super ET), Jeff Weets (Modified), and Lou Rausch (Top ET) faced off against each other to claim the title of Track Champion. First round paired Rausch against Rosenbohm in a battle of Top vs. Street. Rosenbohm was off the line first with an .028 reaction time on his 14.40 dial to Rausch's .023 light on his 7.93 dial. At the finish line, it was Rosenbohm taking the win with a 14.400 dead on run to Rausch's 7.951. The next battle was Weets vs. Cozad. Cozad dialed an 11.57 to Weets' 9.33 dial; off the line it was an .046 reaction time for Cozad who broke out with a 11.550 to Weets' .017 light and 9.336 ET. In the final, it was Rosenbohm who went -.018 red against Weets to give Weets the 2015 Track Champion title. Afterwards, champion Jeff Weets said, "It's still kind of a whirlwind, crazy weekend. We had problems with the car on Saturday. I look at it like we had four champs (Rosenbohm, Cozad, Rausch, Weets) that day, I have a lot of respect for them all. There is no other track like Cordova, I've raced over 40 years and it's like family, like no other place that's for sure. I would like to thank my wife Risa and my kids Emily, Katie, Sarah, Chris and Paul." General Manager, Bobbi Jo Cox, added, "The entire Cordova staff wants to congratulate all our class champions and winners from the weekend. We know it was a hard fought battle all season long for all of our racers. A big congrats to Jeff Weets and family on their big win on Sunday and we know they'll be celebrating all winter long!"
